Was hat eigentlich dieser Release mit der something wicked story zu tun??

Das ist mir nie klar, kann mir das mal jemand erklären?

Ich frage mich jetzt eigentlich nur noch, ob ich dich fragen sollte, was den die Handlung in dieser Trilogie ist oder ob ich es selbst herausfinden soll...

Die Trilogie auf SWTWC hat keine richtige Story. Das ist nur eine kurze Zusammenfassung der richtigen Storyline. Also les dir einfach die Lyrics der Trilogie durch, dann weißte worum es in etwa geht bei den Alben. Besser kann ich's aber auch nicht erklären, sonst frag am besten Schaffer persönlich auf Wacken

naja, ich will mich mal bedeckt halten, was ich von dem album erwarte... ich bin diese ganzen ripper/jon schaffers neue linie diskussionen noch von the glorious burden zeiten leid^^ einfach mal abwarten und schauen, mich mit dem album befassen werde ich auf jeden fall, enttäuschender vorgänger/nichtsaussagende vorab single hin oder her...

ich denke auch, dass ein teil der lieder aus intros oder überleitungen bestehen wird, kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass der werte herr schaffer binnen eines jahres (wie lange ist die ankündigung her? ich weiß nur, dass jon zum zeitpunkt der bekanntmachung der form der fortsetzung der sw story eigenen aussagen zufolge noch keine einzige note geschrieben haben soll..) 30 brauchbare songs ausspuckt...

Hier mal ein kurzes Review von der EMP-Redaktion:

Jahre der Arbeit seitens Jon Schaffers und Jahre des Wartens der Fans sind endlich vorbei! Nun ist er also fertig, der erste Teil des Mammutwerks und nach zahlreichen Durchläufen ist klar: Der Aufwand hat sich gelohnt! Das 70-minütige Konzeptalbum erfüllt alle Erwartungen, ist facettenreich wie keine andere Iced Earth-Scheibe und reicht von den klassischen, Stakkato-lastigen Stücken bis hin zu wandlungsfähigen, mehrstimmigen, durchaus komplexen Songs. Unterm Strich lässt sich sagen, dass der Hang zu noch mehr Melodie, Epik und Bombast hier seine konsequente Fortsetzung findet - was natürlich auch in der ausgefeilten Konzeptstory begründet ist, deren zweiter und letzter Teil im Frühjahr 2008 erscheinen wird. Bis dahin kann man sich ausgiebig mit vorliegendem Longplayer beschäftigen, denn der ganze Variantenreichtum und die unzähligen kleinen Details verlangen schon mehr Hördurchläufe als ein reguläres Album. Dass sich der Aufwand lohnt, steht außer Frage, der Selbstversuch des Schreibers dieser Zeilen war schließlich erfolgreich! (Andreas Reissnauer / 30.06.2007)

Klingt doch schon mal recht gut.. facettenreich, abwechslungsreich... allerdings auch bombastischer und epischer..

Mal wieder ein komplett nichtsagendes Review von EMP.

Mit keiner Zeile wurde z.B. ein Song erwähnt der dem Reszenenten (oder so??) besonders gefällt oder aus dem Album herausragt.

Man hätte diese Kritik auch für jedes beliebige andere Album schreiben können.

Man sollte immer im Hinterkopf bei Reviews von Mailorderfirmen haben, dass diese ja das Produkt schließlich verkaufen wollen.

Also warten wirs ab.

Aber es wäre ja schön wenn Iced Earted qualitativ an die Something Wicked Scheibe anknüpfen könnten

Stimmt auch wieder, aber hier mal ein anständiges Review von "Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles". Komisch dass gerade dieses Magazin exklusiv in die Scheibe reinhören durfte, denn da gab's wohl mal Probleme zwischen Band und Magazin wie man auf Wikipedia.de nachlesen kann: "Einen Skandal gab es, als ein Interview mit Schaffer im kanadischen Heavy-Metal-Magazin Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles veröffentlicht wurde. Schaffer beschuldigte das Magazin, seinen Äußerungen den Bezug genommen und eine Voreingenommenheit gegenüber den USA unterstrichen zu haben. Er kündigte an, dass die Band das Magazin in Zukunft boykottieren würde."

ICED EARTH – Unofficial Framing Armageddon Review

This isn’t intended to be an actual review, given I only had one listen, where I tried to decipher the complex story-line, enjoy the music and jot down comments, simultaneously. What follows is an excerpt of my notes, taken during a real time, track by track playback. Hopefully it will whet the appetite for the scheduled mid-September release of Part One via SPV.

'Overture': Begins with a slow ‘samba’ type rhythm, cello and eventually, tasteful guitar notes. Female chants segues right into the rolling triplets, but not balls out speed of…

'Something Wicked (Part 1)': Chugging riffs, a nice guitar break and then Tim ("Ripper Owens), in a more normal (albeit still high) voice. Repeated false endings of crashing drums.

'Invasion': Big screen sci-fi animation effects. Think THX Star Wars battle scenes.

'The Motivation Of Man': Distant voiceover begins, then Owens with a different voice. Without a break, leads into…

'The Setian Massacre': Where man kills off most of the Setian race, fueling revenge plot. Every conceivable space filled with a rich, bombastic sound. Measured guitar solo cuts through the center.

'A Charge To Keep': Slow, heavy, remorseful to convey the sense of tremendous loss. Chorus in multiple voiced choir (signifying the survivors). Ends abruptly, switching to Ripper a cappella.

'Reflections': Acoustic. Short. Final sustained high note unbelievable, leading directly into single.

'Ten Thousand Strong': Galloping single. First track of that speed and magnitude. Title represents the # of Setian survivors.

'Execution': Otherworldly to Western ears. Music atop a lone echoing guitar and cymbal crashes.

'Order Of The Rose': Again, no segue, Ripper screams. Not high pitched, but aggressive, anger/kill voice.

'The Clouding': Massive rush of wind and storm introduces soothing '70s rock, complete with bluesy, slide guitar. Lengthy and lyrically packed. Gradually building as Setians erase mankind’s memory. Second half jumps to full band, aggressive. Essentially two songs in one. “Never trust the motives of man. They failed to evolve in Mother Nature’s plan.”

'Infiltrate And Assimilate': More typical Iced Earth style, but not exactly. Long scream after pre-chorus. Tim wailing beneath choir of voices, including his own. The 10,000 leave hiding and go amongst humanity. Another dead stop ending.

'Retribution Through The Ages': Ripper mostly in high register. Catchy, but again, not stereotypical IE. Chorus is easy to pick up after a couple of run throughs.

'Something Wicked (Part 2)': Uptempo, acoustic flamenco guitar and tables. Recurrent theme eventual replaced by electric guitar, although continues in background.

'The Domino Decree': WOW, majestic intro includes somewhat psychedelic, quirky, unsettling Hammond organ, which eventually gets a solo! Ripper in the stratosphere, although fades out solely with organ.

'Framing Armageddon': Similar in style to 'Ten Thousand Strong'. Amazing finishing vocal sustain.

'When Stars Collide (Born Is He)': Sung entirely in choir, a slower, heavy chugger.

'The Awakening': Female chant atop Middle Eastern rhythms, backed by choir of male voices and the low moan of cello or upright bass.

Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer kindly granted Lucem Fero a short snippet of his time to discuss the multi-layered story, a tale which begins twelve thousand years ago and leads us to the modern day. Slated as an “in depth look into this very tragic, heavy and apocalyptic sci-fi / fantasy story”, the grandiose expectations have proven tantalising for Metal fans and pundits alike. Is the forecast all hype, or actually a sign of things to come? The axeman behind the tale offers his perspective.

Can you give me an overview of the Something Wicked story, and what it's about and so on?

Well, an overview is really pretty difficult because it's so complex. Basically the story that I wrote back in late 1997, an original album called Something Wicked This Way Comes, ended with the trilogy.That trilogy was a point in time in the story that I wrote, so it's always been planned to actually do this big giant concept album. We had to put it on hold for a while due to changing record companies and what not, but it felt like it was time about a year and half ago to carry it on which is what I did. It's a big science fiction, fantasy thriller oriented story. It basically comes with the idea that mankind is alien to the planet Earth, and that there was a culture in ancient Earth, a culture here before us. The ones who had survived mankind are actually manipulating, and manipulating everything that we do now by the creation of religion - mankind divided, and blah blah blah. It's a big story which covers the period of about twelve thousand years, and that's what I mean when I say we could talk about it for hours. There's not any way to give you a short overview of the tale.

Do you feel that the concept has benefited because you've had so many years to ponder about it and so on?

The basics of the concept were there back then, so it wasn't like a matter of really sitting down to ponder and contemplate through the years. I already knew what it was that I was going to do. I started collecting the world instruments and so on because I knew that was going to be a texture of it back seven or eight years ago, so this isn't really a new thing. It was February 2006 when I built my studio and got the Pro Tools ready and everything, and that's when I started writing. For a year straight I basically worked on it like every day, and I took about four days off in a year. We started cutting drum tracks in February 2007, so I've been working really hard on this thing for quite a while.

Are there any lyrics written yet for that second album?

No, but I know the themes of the songs and the titles of the songs and everything. I designed the music around that, but I haven't really sat down and started working on it. That's going to happen after Wacken, in between Wacken and the headline tour that starts in October. I will finish all the writing of the lyrics and the vocals, and then we get done touring the U.K. with HEAVEN AND HELL. We then come back, go into the studio and finish recording the album.

I was just wondering why you put only three songs on Something Wicked This Way Comes, instead of doing a whole album based on the story.. at first?

Because it was an introduction to the story.

Do you know if the story will extend beyond these two albums?

Well it certainly could, but will it with Iced Earth? I don't know.. I don't know, but I doubt it actually. It's possible, but I doubt it.

How would you describe these upcoming two albums in musical terms?

They're very melodic, very heavy, very epic and atmospheric. I also think they're fresh in a lot of ways because there are definitely elements in there that I've never heard mixed with a heavy metal band, though I'm not saying it hasn't been done. I haven't heard it; I've never heard anybody use world instruments in the context I have.

Is the music on that song [10.000 Strong] reflective of the new album?

In part, but there's actually way more to the album; way more depth and colours. “Ten Thousand Strong” is a pretty straightforward Metal song, though the album has a lot of colours and atmospheres. It's a rollercoaster ride.

How would you like the "Something Wicked" story to be remembered in the coming years?

I want people to remember it as something really cool, and as a special record. I hope that 'Part 1' and '2' will be looked at as a highlight in the ICED EARTH catalogue, and it's my goal to make it our 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'The Wall' or whatever for ICED EARTH. So, that's the goal and hopefully people will look at it as really special. The story itself though, beyond the band, and what it develops into... well anything goes. I'm just not going to get ahead of myself.

Tönt wirklich verlockend! Wenigstens hat er mir jetzt endlich eine Übersicht über die something wicked story verschafft!

Klingt wirklich vielversprechend, vor allem soll es wohl recht abwechslungsreich werden mit verschiedenen "weltlichen" Einflüssen. Er hat auch noch einiges mehr zur Story erzählt, wen's interessiert hier gucken.

Fehlt eigentlich nur noch der perfekte Sänger!

Ripper ist ein genialer sänger... Der hat auch bei priest nen super job gemacht. Vielleich bringt er net ganz die emotion von Barlow, aber rocken tut er trotzdem

Vielleicht ist das jetzt etwas fies, aber Ripper konnte Halford nicht ersetzen und Barlow wird er auch nicht ersetzen können. Meine Meinung. Ist eigentlich nur die Nummer 3, denn ich finde auch John Greely etwas besser. Und die Barlow songs wirken mit Ripper nicht so gut. Ich hoffe einfach mal, dass das neue Album wirklich ein Hammer wird.

Ich sehe Ripper auch als guten Sänger an, auch wenn es schwer ist Barlow zu ersetzen. Ich habe kürzlich noch Ripper mit seiner Band Beyond Fear gehört. Da gibt er auch alles auf der Scheibe.

Klar erkenne ich, dass die Songs für Barlow geschrieben wurden. Aber deswegen finde ich es doof, dass sie einen Sänger, der total anders ist als Barlow, nahmen. Jemand in der Liga Barlow/Greely wäre mir da lieber gewesen.
Barlow singt Stormrider besser als Greely, mMn.

Iced Earth wurden für ein Konzert am 15.Oktober im Z7 in Pratteln bestätigt. Dabei kann es sich unmöglich um ein Einzelkonzert handeln, also werden Iced Earth wohl im Oktober ne Europatour machen
