Greetings - winging my way to Germany to go and see the last show in Joe Bonamassa's European tour in Lorsch, Germany tonight. Had another very productive week with Maiden, and some hedonistic nights out with long-time Maiden photographer, Ross Halfin, but that's another story!!
Mixed another two songs this week - the first (and #8 on the album) is one of my favorite mixes so far, it's almost 10 minutes long and sounds huge and very cinematic and I am very happy with it. The lads came in and 'Arry says that's the way he thinks Maiden should sound - and wished he could remix some older material - but I think older stuff is to be celebrated because of it's chronological perspective, and should be left alone! Wing Commander Biggles rushed in on Monday to pick up a CD, as he was piloting a commercial flight to India later that day and wanted to listen to some mixes, and got back on Wednesday after a visit to the Taj Mahal and is ecstatic about the album's sound. I'm sure all you anoraks out there will find plenty of stuff to keep the bulletin boards and forums on fire for a while to come!!!
Adrian was in and played a killer solo over Song #9, sounding a little like Trevor Rabin meets Pat Thrall - with an octave divider - and then finished off with some kinda theramin sounding histrionics, over the solo section reserved for Janick - but it sounded so great, and Janick was away with his family, so we're decided to keep it!! Hope Jan doesn't mind............

This will, in fact, be the last recording diary, as I finish the final mix today! And I love the album. Bruce was in again on Monday to do the last vocal track, which is so high, only dogs can hear it - and then we painstakingly compiled the early verses - as Steve has a very particular thing he wanted to hear on the vocals. Maiden do-all-chap Dave Pattenden came to the studio to do a recce for new Maiden pix with the photographer - Adrian called in to see how things were coming along - Davey's wife emailed me about their flat in London where I'm holed up (although no word from Davey, who's work on this record is stellar!), and on Tuesday, as I entered the studio I was suprised by the sight of Nicko in neon pyjamas, just landed from Florida, who embraced me very warmly (well, you could if you would, old boy - shouldn't you!). I love that man, but not as much as he loves me! It's true! Haha! 0h, that's an "in" joke, sorry! * To stop him talking, so I could work, I stuck my iPod into Nicko's ears, and played him the final mixes. He was very impressed, and so we sent our assistant Alex out to get Nicko his own iPod (which they no doubt put on the recording budget so now I'll never recoup!), and I dumped the Maiden tracks onto his iPod, along with some Alison Krauss and Miles Davis, before he went to see the Queen review, We Will Rock You, for the umpteenth time! There's no accounting for taste, really! After that, Wing Commander Biggles cycled in on his bike to pick up a CD before flying a sortie to Sierra Leone, as 'Arry looked over gigs for his gorgeous and talented daughter Lauren, who's becoming a star in her own right! Jan was in on Tuesday, and we started the long and laborious process of overdubbing guitars onto the last song on the album. It's a lengthy process, because it's a song that he has written a lot of the music for, and has demo'd it with a very straight drum machine program, and not at all like the skip and galloping that Nicko and 'Arry have played on the track - and so we had to find the middle ground between the versions, which is ultimately how Iron Maiden sound! There are also layers af acoustic guitars - 6 and 12 strings - and after the lead solo Jan added late last night, all we have to add today are a few keyboard washes and then I'll finish the mix! Album done!!! And the title is............... I don't bloody know, and if I did, I couldn't tell you anyway, could I? Tomorrow I'll get the B side mixes started and then next week, I'll be mixing some surround sound live material for later use - before i head off to Barcelona on the weekend or the Formula 1 race, and then back to California.

Während Kevins Deutschlands-Aufenthalts hat er eine Show von Joe Bonamassa gesehen, und zwar in Lorsch (Hessen).
Jetzt zu Maiden: Diese Woche hat er wieder zwei Songs gemixed (Nr. 7 und Nr. 8), wobei der Mix des 8. einer seiner bishereigern Favoriten ist. Sehr interessant für uns ist, dass dieser Song knapp 10 Minuten lang ist. Er klänge groß und filmisch (vielleicht bedeutet das theatralisch). Also in meinen Augen heißt das, dass doch ein Epos auf dem Album ist! Steve meinte dazu, dass so ein Maiden-Song klingen sollte, und wünschte, dass Kevin ältere Songs remixt – Kevin meint aber, die älteren Nummern sollen so bleiben, wie sie in der Geschichte entstanden sind. Bruce hat sich für einen Indien-Trip eine CD mit den aktuellen Mixes mitgenommen. Er ist vom Album-sound absolut begeistert. Kevin meint, dass im Deutschen Iron Maiden Forum bestimmt super lange die Post abgeht, da über viele Dinge des neuen Albums gesprochen werde, wenn die Songs veröffentlicht sind.
Adrian hat ein geiles Solo zum Song Nr. 9 aufgenommen, das wohl ungewöhnlich klingt. Die Passage habe ich auch nicht richtig verstanden. Möglicherweise hat Adrian noch Sounds aus seiner Klampfe herausgeholt, als Janicks Solo begannt, aber diese Sounds wurden dringelassen, weil's so gut klänge.
Am 04. Mai wurden dann die letzten Aufnahmen zum 14. Iron Maiden Album durchgeführt. Bruce sangs seine Vocals ein, wobei diese ungewöhnlich hoch seien. Endlich wieder ein Detail! Man darf gespannt sein!
Die zweite Hälfte weniger ausführlich: Alle sind begeistert. Janick hat noch was zum letzten Songs eingespielt, zu dem er weite Teile als Songwriter beigesteuert hat. Kevin beschäftigt sich dann noch mit den B-Seiten und mit irgendwelchen Dolby-Surround-Sounds, die irgendwann später mal verwendet werden sollen. Vielleicht mag jemand anderes ja noch mehr Details zum zweiten Teil schreiben...

Nicht ganz.... Adrian hat ein Solo aufgenommen für einen Part, der für Janick "reserviert" war ... und sie hoffen, dass er nix dagegen hat, wenn er es erfährt also ich hab sicher nix dagegen
Ich hab auch nichts dagegen, dass Adrian das Solo übernommen hat. Bei Janick schätze ich mehr seine songschreiberischen Fähigkeiten (Beispiel: Dance of Death (song) - Hammer!).

meint ihr der caveman blufft oder haben die wirklich noch keine idee bzw. entscheidung getroffen - wie das album heißen und aussehen soll ?!?! normalerweise bekommt es doch immer den titel eines besonderen stückes !?!

Natürlich hat das Album schon nen Titel. Der kommt ja immer von einem Song. Oder das Album hat keinen Titelsong wie bei Piece Of Mind, X Factor oder Virtual XI... 10.05.2006: Iron Maiden mit U-Boot-Opus? Angeblich haben IRON MAIDEN für ihren bereits so gut wie fertigen neuen Longplayer einen außergewöhnlichen Bonustrack aufgenommen. Dabei soll es sich um ein 49-minütiges Epos mit dem Titel 'Hunt For Red October' handeln, das zur Hälfte auf Russisch eingesungen wurde - behauptet zumindest (in leicht angetrunkenem Zustand) Producer Kevin Shirley...
Na, das wird sicher nur ein Gerücht bleiben. Kevin war sicher in großer Feierlaune nach Beendigung der Aufnahmen!
Also das halte ich wirklich für ein Gerücht. 49 Minuten ist unrealistisch. Geht ja auch gar nicht, dann bräuchte man ja 2 CDs. Hätte er ne Zeit zwischen 10 und 15 Minuten genannt, wäre es glaubwürdiger. Obwohl Maiden ja schon einen U-Boot Song haben, nämlich Run Silent Run Deep. Naja, wenn es ein Bonustrack (siehe oben!) ist, könnte man den ja auf eine Maxi-CD mit draufpacken und als EP verkaufen. Da geht ja auch eine Spielzeit von knapp 80 min. drauf. Technisch möglich wäre es also...

ich denke da eher an halbwahrheiten.... wahrscheinlich geht der song statt 49 min. "nur" 10-15 min. und handelt von einem konflikt mit russen - statt russischem gesang.... irgendwie sowas könnte ich mir vorstellen !

Ich frag mich was los ist, Shirleys Homepage wurde geschlossen. Ich kann zwar Englisch, kapier das was auf maidenfans.com darüber (über Ross und Kevin) steht nicht wirklich. Das einzige was ich irgendwie versteh ist, dass Kevin irgendwelchen Mist gebaut hat. Der hat mal wieder zuviel gesoffen. Und Ross hat sich irgendwie über ihn lustig gemacht. Anscheinend hat Kevin wohl auch irgendwas übers neue Album verrraten, was er wohl nicht durfte. Lest es euch selbst durch.

In this month's diary, Ross Halfin -the famous photographer- had a lot to report about Kevin Shirley, producer of the forthcoming but yet-untitled Iron Maiden album.
While it is difficult to separate irony from reality -Ross is known for not taking Kevin seriously from time to time-, Kevin's libations have opened some insight... and got his website closed.

May 9:
Woke up this morning to several messages from a happy (drunk) Kevin Shirley. They'd been left at 2am. The Caveman was letting me know he'd finished a new Iron Maiden extra track called The Hunt For Red October. It's about a submarine (really, I'd never have guessed) and it's forty-nine minutes long. It's sung in Russian and English. He then proceeds to sing me most of the lyrics, including the bits in Russian, in a Waltzing Matilda voice. 'I'm not allowed to post this on the Maiden site, I've been censored by the band's communist management. I recorded some of it in the bath - I used cold water so you get a real feel of being in the Bering Sea...' His message then cuts off...
I rang him this morning - he didn't pick up the phone. Wonder how he's feeling...
May 11:
It was a beautiful evening. Went up to the Gibson guitar shop in London to meet up with Jimmy Page and Kevin Shirley. We watched a band called the Flaming Monkeys. The drummer was outstanding, doing fast fills and tom tom work like the old surf record Wipe-out. Jimmy and I were impressed. Kevin was trying to show off, chatting to girls and his friend Dick in poor Russian. As the copious amount of wine he consumed kicked in he told me the Iron Maiden album is finished, and is great - he even offered to sing some lyrics and hum a few time changes. The band should hire him as their new PR.

Notice The CAVEMAN is trying to do "Damage Limitation", as they say in America. I think he's been told off by a certain manager. As The CAVEMAN says, what does he (and Dick Carruthers, another expert on anything) know about Heavy Metal. I'll answer it for them - nothing... All I can say is The CAVEMAN likes a drink - I rest my case...

Ich schätze mal, dass es wirklich einen Song gibt, der mit "The Hunt for Red October" zu tun hat, was er nicht hätte verraten dürfen. Der Song wird wohl etwas länger sein (vermutlich um die 10 min.), aber nie und nimmer 49 Minuten, das hat er sicher im Suff hinzu erfunden. Darauf deutet ja auch, dass er dafür angeblich einiges im Bad bei eiskaltem Wasser aufgenommen hat, um eine Stimmung wie in der Bering See zu imitieren. Nee, is klar! Der gute Kevin scheint echt ein kleines Alkoholproblem zu haben.

Und dieser Song ist auch nicht so lang. Ich mein, das bringen ja nichtmal Dream Theater fertig. Octavarium ist ja grad mal 24 Minuten lang. Ne, also so 10-15 Minuten kann sein, aber nicht viel mehr.

Also einen Song darüber kann ich mir vorstellen, aber ein ganzes Album...? Und wenn das Album 49 Minuten mit 10 Liedern sein würde, davon Track 8 10 Minuten lang ist, dann sind die anderen im Schnitt so um die 4 Minuten lang und das würde dem Trend der letzten Alben überhaupt nicht entsprechen, also denke ich mal des stimmt nicht. --------------------------------------------- Come on let's go fuckin' mad!
Glaub ich kaum, was soll man denn in nem ganzen Album über ein U Boot schreiben. Ein Song ja. Aber vielleicht wirds ja doch ein Konzeptalbum, vll wird es deswegen auch immer dementiert. Aber nicht über Red October. Und dass Maiden ein Album mit im Schnitt 4 min. langen Songs mahcne glaub ich kaum.
